IMG_5401If you’re looking for funky, come to Greenwood. In this unique north Seattle neighborhood, a typical afternoon stroll down the central Greenwood Avenue passes the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Store —a combo space supply vendor/community writing center, the Sip and Ship—a chic one stop combination café and mailing business, and Mr. Gyro’s—home of Seattle’s best falafel sandwich. These are just a smattering of the distinctive gems Greenwood has to offer.

Greenwood is an appealing option for those looking to live in a place with a cozily local, distinctive neighborhood feel that maintains convenient access to the big city amenities. It’s an easy 15-minute bus ride south to downtown Seattle, or the University of Washington, and is bordered on the east by highway 99, a main north-south artery.

Along the central Greenwood Avenue, residents can easily tend to all the necessities of daily life. Here, the post office, grocery stores, and the well-stocked Greenwood library  are all within a convenient four block walking distance. Many of the neighborhood’s most treasured, eclectic eateries and hangouts can also be found along Greenwood Ave. Neptune Coffee is a local favorite—a café by day, and music venue in the evenings. Just around the corner, devoted and ravenous locals flock to Gorditos Healthy Mexican Food—famous for their Yule log-sized delectable burritos.

Greenwood is also an excellent place for families looking for a place with a friendly, safe atmosphere, and unique educational options. Daniel Bagley Elementary has a two track contemporary methods, or Montessori curriculum with a school-wide focus on visual and performing arts. Also in the neighborhood is the aptly named Greenwood Elementary, which has been awarded for its emphasis on environmentally focused education and for being a “Green” school.

Smaller scale monthly art walks are also a feature of the neighborhood, held on the second Friday of each month. The nearby Phinney Farmers Market, open every Friday afternoon from May-Oct., provides another opportunity for residents to connect.

A final attraction? Recreation lovers will appreciate Greenwood’s proximity to the resplendent Greenlake—a beautiful urban lake circumscribed by a three mile paved loop. The site is a favorite destination of joggers and dog walkers throughout the city.
