Once you pass the pillars which have marked the entrance to Windermere Road for many years, you’ll find wide streets, large homes, and views of Lake Washington. Since its establishment in 1910, Windermere has been an exclusive high end neighborhood in North Seattle, and it is located between Laurelhurst and Magnuson Park.
Inside Windermere is mostly residential homes. There is also a private park for Windermere residents and guests. Here you’ll find a playground, softball backstop, tennis courts, and a lakefront beach. Neighborhood socials are located at the park, including regular new resident cocktail parties, Wednesday afternoon and Friday evening activities through the summer, and seasonal events such as a Fourth of July parade and an Easter egg hunt. A neighborhood yacht club organizes sailing regattas during the summer.
Windermere is bordered by the Burke-Gilman Trail, a thoroughfare for walkers, runners, cyclists, and skaters; and it is adjacent to Magnuson Park, a former military base and now Seattle’s second largest park. Within its 350 acres and mile of Lake Washington shoreline, Magnuson has play fields, a newly renovated children’s playground, and a community center.
Windermere’s closest shopping district is along Sand Point Way where you can enjoy a sandwich or a treat at The Great Harvest Bread Company, or shop at City People’s Mercantile where you can find anything you are looking for from house wares to hardware, gardening supplies, and toys. The Sand Point Grill offers a local sustainable menu and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
As of 2010, Sand Point Elementary is the K-5 option for the Seattle Public Schools.
